American inventor Marion Donovan is credited with creating the first waterproof disposable diaper in 1949. Donoval called her invention the boater, but when she had difficulty selling it, she improved the design to great success. Saks Fifth Avenue was the first retailer to carry the waterproof disposable diaper.
