Is Australia a continent or a country?

It is both..... The country of Australia entails most of the continent of Australia but there are other countries there as well. For example New Zealand, the Figi Islands and Papua New Guinea

Japan is an island country off the coast of Asia but it is part of Asia.

The Japanese are considered Asians by many people.

wtf? how the hell is that like Japan?? That is nothing like Japan at all other than both being islands and both being countries. I still don't think you got the memo.... Australia is a country that makes up a part of the continent Australia. But other countries are in Australia as well. Japan is just a country, that is a part of the continent of Asia. How is that at all relating to what is being discussed?

Both.

Some people use the Oceania term as the name of the continent for the region, so I don't think anyone has decided for certain whether to call it Australia itself a continent.

When I was in grade school, we learned about 7 continents and I recall they taught us this way of thinking (Oceania).
