Russians like soups, pies, roasted meats, mashed potato, pickles. Russian traditional dinner usually includes salads, which are significantly different from salads in the US and Western Europe: they are filling, usually contain a lot of meat, sausage and mayo. Another popular food is pelmeni, which is something resembling ravioli or tortellini, with meat filling, and vareniki, which is a similar dish, but filled with cottage cheese, potato or even berries and served with sour cream. Russian cuisine is also associated with radish, horse radish, beets, pickled herring, and caviar. Besides that, blinis (crepes with various fillings) and pirozhkis (small pies with fillings) are also traditional Russian dishes.
An example of a Russian traditional salad is "herring under a fur-coat", which is a layered salad of chopped salted herring, onion, egg, boiled carrot, potato, beets, and mayo.
