How did the Gulf of Mexico get its name?

Report as

The Gulf of Mexico got its name from the Spanish who had migrated to Mexico. This Gulf was then unnamed until early 1540s and considered part of the Atlantic Ocean. The Spanish name that was most often applied to the gulf was Seno Mexicano, where seno meant "gulf" or "bay". Occasionally it was also referred to as 'Golfo de Nueva Espa?a, or Golfo de M?xico
