I came of age in those years; and in my experience this rate of attrition is incapable of expressing the quality of life irretrievably lost through PTSD, Agent Orange neuropathy, attempted suicide, deliberate government ostracism.
Also, these numbers are for American Vietnam vets. I could not find numbers for Asian veterans of that war.

It's a hell of an attrition rate.
I don't know what happened in the US but when our Australian soldiers arrived home from Vietnam they were completely ignored by our government. Add the feelings of injustice from that, to the possible guilt caused by the outcry against the war, and the stage was set for a whole raft of mental disorder.
It's only in the last 20 years that their sacrifice has been officially acknowledged.
