How do you get addicted to reading or books?

I want to get addicted to reading or books because I'm not good at reading fast and poor at remembering new words and grammars etc. So I tried to start out with an interesting novel but still it's boring when I'm reading. So anyone have a good advice? I wanna be a bookworm so my mom can stop telling me to read books and be like my father?

Dear Scream,

Good for you to look into this now, while you are young...reading and literacy can be such a fulfilling part of your life!

Here is from experience with my godchild, who was around ten years old when we started to work on her reading. What we did, she and I would read out loud together! It was so wonderful and fun. We read at bedtime usually, and chose simple books we both loved. My god daughter got so good that she would wait until my turn was over and then point out the mistakes I had made!

For her, most of the problem was that she was not really getting all the words - just sounding them out and skipping over them. So reading out loud meant savoring each word, allowing the full meaning of each sentence to sink in.

Plus the joy of doing it together and laughing good times!

Nice story Virginia! You just reminded me of my little brother. I started reading to him when I brought him back from the hospital and continued to read to him bedtime stories till he was about 12. When he was 7, he got impatient with me reading only one chapter a night of Lucky Luke and read it himself. At 10, he read "Alice's adventures..." because he wanted to know more. He learned that books are a way to find out about things and to entertain himself. We never had cable (at that time) and video gametime was rather limited for him. He is grown now and still an avid reader.

Momo is right. It's a nice story, but yours always are.

Scream, it's gotta be fun. Read about stuff you enjoy. I started at about age 7 with kids books, fhen all kinds of stories, and eventually, when reading had become a pleasure, I moved up to more useful subjects.

Reading is a magic carpet that can transport your imagination into all sorts of wonderful places that you can't reach any other way -- even at the movies. I hope you learn to love it, for it will give you so much.

But forget about using words like "bookworm". You don't have to stop enjoying active things just because you're a reader.

Ugh last sentence rubbed me the wrong way "be like your father" why? Be like YOU. We all have our strengths and weaknesses, interests and dislikes and so on that make us who we are. When your mom says to "be more like your father" be like "I'd rather be like me"

Reading however is a very beneficial thing, it widens your vocabulary and helps improve learning and writing skills. What I do is paint a picture in my mind of what the writer is describing. Sometimes when the author is detailed I almost feel like I'm watching a movie! Second point, find a book you enjoy.

personally I really enjoy reading, but. not everyone does, and that's ok!

It raised my hackles, too. Poor kid's under the wrong kind of pressure.

I know! You can encourage kids to read but not to be someone other than themselves. Parents should teach their kids it's ok to be you.

I'm addicted to this one...oh well, it's so good! I am reading the first book in a totally new series and it's amazing. I love the story and it's a combination of fantasy/horror/mystery. Anyway, if you're interested the book is titled: HEWN and it's from the Ultimate Fantasy Series by J. G. Cuff.
Copy the link below and paste it if you want to preview the book first for free. Good luck!

What's so very good about reading so many books, is that you'll never ran out of topics when you meet different types of people. Whatever place, whatever occasion, people will enjoy your company if you have so many stories to tell, or knowledgeable in a wide range of subjects.

The most important rule about reading, is, if the book doesn't captivate you, put it down and never pick it up again. There are many books that will captivate you - don't waste time reading stuff you don't like, when you could be finding the captivating ones.
