To make kettle corn at home you will need 1/4 cup of vegetable oil, 1/4 cup of white granulated or brown sugar and 1/2 cup of un-popped popcorn. Heat the oil in a heavy, large pot with a cover on the stove top over a medium heat. Stir in the sugar and popcorn and cover. Shake the pot constantly to prevent the sugar from burning. When the audible pops slow to once every 2-3 second, remove from heat but continue to shake until popping stops. Pour into a large bowl and cool. Using white sugar will give a taste reminiscent of popcorn balls while brown sugar will taste like caramel corn.
In a large pot over medium-high heat, add 1/2 cup of vegetable oil. Once the oil begins to smoke, turn the heat down to medium and add 1 cup of popcorn kernels and 3/4 cup of sugar, Cover the pot with a lid. Give the pot a shake a couple of times once the corn starts to pop. After the popping has slowed down significantly, about four minutes, remove the pot from the heat. Pour the popcorn into a large bowl and add 1 teaspoon of salt. Shake well and serve.
