If you have had an appendix burst hat happened after the doctor took out the pieces? (ex. Did you get infection from the bacteria, etc.)

did you have you have to stay at the hospital to make sure infection and bacteria didn't spread, did they send you home after a day or so after the surgery, etc.

My brothers appendix burst when he was 19. He was real sick, hurting in the lower right side, but he didn't tell anyone. We went to the store and his girlfriend bought some Oreo cookies. My brother ate 2. I told him I knew he was hiding something, because he didn't eat the whole bag. He started vomiting and he told me where he was hurting. He said don't tell mom and dad I'm sick because I'm okay now. We went to our parents house, and I said mom, dad Michael is real sick, and I think it's his appendix. The he got real sick. We took him to the hospital, and the nurse said that the surgeon was at a party and couldn't be disturbed. My dad drove 80 miles an hour to get to the next town, and he had emergence surgery, his appendix had burst, and the infection had already started to spread, so he had to stay a week for observation, and antibiotics.

See mine burst too and I had taken out after it burst an went home a day or so after an ended up going back to the hospital for pretty much the same reason. But I almost dies twice cause of the infection had gotten so bad. The doctors should have kept me like they did your brother. This is why I asked cause I wanted to know what everyone's doctor did for their burst appendix. This was pretty helpful for me. Now I need to hear more stories from more people. Sounds like your brother did just fine compared to me so that's good to hear.

If you are still sick from this, you need to see another doctor. I'm sorry, but I should have told you this yesterday, but did not want to scare you 1/2 to death if this was something that you had just got over. Since you are still sick you need to know that my dads appendix burst, he had surgery, and went home 2 days later. He was real sick for the next 2 days. He told my mom he needed to go back, because something was wrong. At the hospital, under a new doctor test showed he had "Gangrene", it's a medical term used to describe the death of an area of the body. It develops when the blood supply is cut off to the affected part as a result of various processes, such as infection, vascular (pertaining to blood vessels) disease, or trauma. My dad was in the hospital 4 solid months, in intensive care, with IV's, tubes down his throat, he almost died several times while in the hospital. He could not get up to bathe or anything. The nurses had to give him bed baths. One day one nurse bathed him, changed the beding, and left the room. After about 5 minutes he started acting real weird, and trying to move groaning, just acting weird. He had the breathing tubes down his throat to breathe for him, so with that he couldn't talk. His hands were also tied, because everytime he wen't to sleep he would pull the life support tube out, and they had to keep putting it back in. So after another 5 or so minutes you could tell in his eyes he was almost dying to tell something. My mom ask if he could write it down. He knodded his head yes. He wrote; "itching all over real real bad!" Mom told the nurse and she decided he was allergic to the betadine they used to bathe him in. It has iodine in it and he was allergic to that. His picture was in the paper, because it was a small town and he was the longest patient ever kept especially in that and surrounding cities, and because of all tubes he had.
I do hope that if you are still sick that you WILL go to a doctor now. Good luck!

My appendix was removed just before it was about to burst. I had to stay in the hospital for an extra day to make sure everything was alright because of my personal health issues.

When mine ruptured I was very sick from the infection and had to stay in the hospital for at least a week after surgery to be observed and to get antibiotics. I have heard of people appearing to be stable after 24 hours of observation so they are sent home, but I don't know how often that occurs.

If you didn't read my comment on the last persons post the same thing happened to me but the doctors said I'm not dead cause of my age and health. They said if it was anyone 10-15 years younger or older they would have probably died. My dad had a friend die 6 months or so after the same thing happened to him but he was around 50 or so, so thats why he died. And like I said in a comment on the last post this I very helpful to me. Thank you.

My appendix burst on a Wednesday night. I didn't know that is what happened as I felt better, but not entirely well. This isn't uncommon. Friday morning, I woke my husband up very early and told him that I needed to go to the hospital. I thought I just had an intestinal virus as my symptoms were similar. In hindsight, I know that some of the odd things I felt were because of the appendix.

I had surgery Friday around 4pm, back to my room by 8pm. I was on two antibiotics while I was in the hospital and then when I went home Sunday afternoon I continued the antibiotics. The surgeon said that after the rupture an abscess formed so that helped to contain the spread of things.

I have heard of others getting very sick from infection and still others that have died shortly after the rupture or due to complications. I feel very blessed to be alive. I remember when I was growing up the thought of most people was that if your appendix bursts you will die. Thankfully this is not true.

Thank you this happened to me about a year and a half ago and it still haunts me and my family and friends. It was BAD! My mom took the next flight out of texas to see me cause everyone thought I was going to die. Everyone says the operation for an appendix (burst or not) is easy but apparently my doctors didn't know what happens after they burst! Dumba**es! I'm nothing close to being a doctor but it's kinda obvious what precautions should have been taken. I'm sorry you had to experience a light version of what I went through. I don't know you but im glad you're alive and it didn't get to the point mine did :)

It's true about 90% of the time. When my dad was a kid his brother was 12 and he was 6 years old. Now we're, 1942. His brothers appendix ruptured, and doctors couldn't operate then, because not all doctors could do surgery, and there wasn't enough known about operating to save very many if any of the patients, so after 2 days he died.

I would love a link to the statistic that 90% of people with a ruptured appendix die. I was only able to find the following information. This data was from a paper I read and their sources were from 1999 and 2005 for that information:

"Thirty percent of all appendicitis patients have a perforated appendix, which can be fatal in 5 percent of cases."

I do think things were different back in the 1940s as medicine has had some advances since then. I am really sorry to hear about your brother. I certainly know that people still died from ruptured appendix and it is a very serious thing from the rupturing itself to any number of complications that can come afterward. I am guessing in underdeveloped countries the statistics are far higher.

My appendix ruptured and was misdiagnosed for 6 months until I got exploratory surgery. The bacteria that spreads is not harmful if it contained in the appendix, however if it spreads to other organs the bacteria can cause the organs to shutdown causing death or severe illness depending on when you got treatment. I was lucky enough tonight to not get an infection, but almost everybody that has gone untreated for more then a day will, nearly everyone who hasn't been treated (my doctor said almost 99%) by 6 weeks, will be dead.
