You can homestead your house by filing a declaration of homestead form from your local county clerk's office. These forms are sometimes available on a county's website as well. Homesteading your house can give you a break on some of your property tax.
First, you must own your house. Then, you simply go down to the Property Appraiser's office in your County and sign a paper that states that your house is your homestead and that you live there (it is not a rental property).
