How Much Should An Engagement Ring Cost

Report as

In discussing how much an engagement ring should cost, likely a certain advertising phrase will pop into your head. That is, 'Two months salary that lasts a lifetime.' But many wonder who decided that an engagement ring should cost two months salary. The answer should be obvious that it was likely a jewelry company who started that line. So truthfully, how much should one spend? Spend what you can afford, whether it is something you finance for a year or spend a large sum on. It does no good to start off a marriage head-over-heels in debt for something you cannot afford. An engagement ring should cost as much as you can afford. The worst thing you can do is go into a marriage with a debt for the engagement ring.

the usual advice is around 1 month's salary, though you will hear some people (mainly girls admittedly) claiming it should be 3 month's! as others have said, the only real rule is to spend what you can afford. you're going to have a lot to pay for between now and the wedding too remember!

It should cost what you can afford-don't follow some made up "rule" about 2 months salary. My engagement/wedding ring set came from a pawn shop & we paid under $200 for it and it was appraised at far higher. Good sized marquise center stone surrounded by baguette diamonds. At a retail store, $200 would have gotten us a chip, not a nice piece of jewelry. That's 1 way to be able to buy a GOOD ring for less than overpriced retail stores-their jewelry mark-up is at least 300%. I think its just ridiculous to go into debt when you'll already have bills to pay. You get what you can afford-you can always get a nicer one, if you choose, for an anniversary at some future point.

You can read about The New Rules Of The Engagement Ring here - http://tiny.cc/engagement-ring-cost

Agree with petite cat on this. Debt cant cause problem in marriage. Think hard before getting into debt. Getting married already has a bunch of expenses built in. But then again its one ring for the rest of your life.

Another thing to consider is that gold isnt the only choice. Platinum or silver is making a big hit in the engagement ring world. Do a little research and find the best deal.

Rules have changed.

It depends on many factor like cut, colour, clarity and carat of diamond. These 4C's actually determines the real worth. An engagement ring should cost as much as you can comfortably afford. But don't go looking for a price tag; look for the ring that suits the woman you love.

I would advise you to find local, reputable jewelry stores and get the latest offers from them. Take your watch and get it physically valued by them. The second step would be to get it valued by an online store. The internet is also a good option to find out value, where the offers can vary greatly.

I have seen some good sites while searching on the Internet click here to visit at http://www.thediamond.com/categories/engagement-anniversary.html and the like who may offer to buy the item outright.
