You can make an upside down tomato planter out of a bucket, hanging planter or even a 2 liter bottle. It's important not to make it too big and heavy. The concept is the same for whatever container you choose, but I prefer the hanging basket because you can then fill the top with any herbs you like to make it even more attractive. First, take a plastic hanging planter and using a hole saw, drill about a 2' hole in the bottom. Place a piece of fabric with a hole in it big enough for the tomato plant's root ball to fit through inside the bottom of your planter. This will help keep the soil inside the planter when you water your plant. Hang the planter and feed the top of your tomato plant down through the fabric and the hole in your planter. Use one hand to support your plant and the other to fill the planter with potting soil. Plant herbs in the top and look forward to enjoying your tasty treats.
To make an upside down hanging tomato planter you will need a bucket with a lid. Remember the bottom is going to be the top, so you will have a good image of what it is going to look like. Drill a hold in the bottom of the bucket large enough for the tomato plant to fit through and a couple on the sides for hanging. Put pieces of rope or wire through the smaller holes on the side to make a way to hang it. Place you plant through the hole and then fill the bucket completely full of soil and some fertilizer. Drill a few small holes in the lid for drainage. Put the lid on and if you have to tape it shut. Hang upside down from a sturdy hook and you've got a hanging tomato basket.
