If planting grass seen in a bare spot, still up the dirt 2-4 inches deep, spread the seed and gently rake the seed and dirt so it is slightly buried. Water the area and keep it damp and keep both food traffic and birds away. If the birds are bad, cover the seed with light layer of straw, soil or peat. The birds will eat the seed and walking on it will kill the seed. You can also simple throw seed on existing grass and water it to make it thicker.
