Fruit flies are probably THE peskiest little bugs that can invade your home. It seems like no matter how well you clean the kitchen, put food away, stop buying fruit even, they still linger! Fruit flies, believe it or not, need water not fruit to survive. Of course they are strongly attracted to the fruit, hence their name, but water is what keeps them around. That being said, make sure that all water is drained from the sink, all water is wiped dry in the kitchen. Then place a drop of dish liquid into a bout 1/4 cup of water and mix it. Take that and pour it into a small bowl of red wine in your kitchen with plastic wrap covering it. Poke small holes in the plastic wrap with either the tip of a steak knife or a fork. The holes should be large enough to let the fruit flies in, but not let them easily get back out. The fruit flies are attracted to the wine, go into the holes, and then drown when they're not able to get back out! It can take maybe a week to get rid of them like this and so worth the effort. More info on how to get rid of them can be found on this website I found: http://www.imdb.com/video/cbs/vi20120089/
Let's face it, fruit flies can be a nuisance. The most important step in getting rid of them is to first get rid of the food source that's attracting them. Fruit flies are attracted to moist organic foods, such as over-ripe or rotting fruit or vegetables. They can also be drawn to garbage or even food left on a sponge. Fortunately, the life span of a gnat or fruit fly is a short two weeks. Once the sources have been removed, to kill the flies and those that will soon hatch, you can turn to fruit fly traps sold in stores or a bug zapper.
To control the rapid fruit flies growth in your home, one good thing that you can do is to eliminate and get rid of the things that can cause as the source of breeding and attraction for the fruit flies on your homes. Don?t ever leave the vegetable or ripened fruit like tomatoes, bananas, potatoes and onions exposed.
