Lent is the Christian period for observing the liturgical year that is from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. The purpose of Lent is for the penitential preparation of the believer. Here is a link you can check out for more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent.
Lent is the 40 days before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday, the day that Jesus was condemned to die, and ends on Easter, when Jesus supposedly rose from the dead. People usually make some sort of personal sacrifice during that period, like giving up candy or smoking. Practicing Christians may also not eat meat on Fridays during Lent.
Since Lent is a serious thing, Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, so that people can get all their partying and vices out of their system while they respect the period of Lent for the next 40 days.
