I'm a teacher and I'm amazed how different students will behave/ work with the proper dose of meds. I do say proper because too much can turn them into zombies. Without meds those same students often cannot focus and fall behind in their studies. This will turn into behavior problems and often retention. Hope this info helps.
The medication is to help the student focus and learn the main ideas of lessons while in school. Use of the medication doesn't happen, generally, on weekends or holidays. Dosage is played with until just the amount needed to focus and learn is determined. If they don't focus, they fail, stay behind, lose their friends, and generally don't fit into their society. I'm a teacher like love5596. I do behaviour classes, so most of my students are ADD, ADHD, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Three students in a 6 student class are bipolar plus ADD, and one is FAS too. None are medicated. I have lots of strategies to deal with over-active behaviour in my class and their being non-medicated is just fine with me, but it is very hard for them to retain information. Their focus is so divided and they bug each other with tapping and other noise. I think a little tiny bit of the right medication would help them fit into the world better.
If they are diagnosed with ADHD, then if the ADHD is really bad and if it is less or alittle more than uncontrolable, and you want to have the little(sometimes big) help with the ADHD, then yes medication would be good.
my wife and i fell into that medication trap for years!!!! when our youngest daughter was diagnosed ADHD. when she reached the age to be responsible for taking it daily on her own,we noticed she miss days, one day we asked her why she was doing this and she said when she was on the meds everything went fairly well in her life,BUT when she was off she felt ALIVE, the moment we heard this we stopped the meds and hadn't realized how much we had missed our baby and how speacial she was all on her own.we used everything available to us to burn her extra energy LOL ......
