Why are purple onions called "red" onions

Report as

It is basically because of the color. They start out in a more reddish color when they're young and the color deepens to purple as they enlarge. When you slice them, you can also see that the flesh leans to be white in the core transitioning to red towards the outside.

If you leave a orange set out for several days it is no longer orange. It is green and fuzzy. Some things change color with age.
