What was the approximate pilferage rate on loading and unloading a ship back in the 1950's, prior to containerization?
Pilferage would take place prior to loading as well of course. Do you know approximately how many percent a manufacturer would have to calculate as theft and damage, from time of loading at factory until cargo was delivered at the final destination overseas? I guess it would depend on the type of cargo, with more valuable, small units of cargo being more prone to pilferage; still I'm looking for overall average percent og all cargo onboard a ship, lost due to cargo handling damage, damage from weather while being handled and then the downright theft of cargo. I am assuming we are into the double digit territory!
