Get up and workout, go for a walk, swim, etc. Your body will release endorphins which will naturally make you feel stronger and that feeling will transfer over to your mind. Dreams are pointless expressions due to the fact that our frontal lobe is being repaired during REM, which is the time in the sleep cycle when we dream.
Maybe you should get a glass of water to calm yourself down. Just relax. Walk around for a little bit. Maybe eat a small snack? Do anything to get your mind off of the dream & you should be able to fall back asleep soon.

You are not alone. This happens to me alot. I do this & it works well for me. I reflect on the nightmare & then I mentally rewrite the dream n my mind 2 give it a happy ending, thus thwarting the bad that happened in the dream. An example; the other morning, around 4:30, I dreamed that my family died in a house fire. I woke up scared. I thought about this horrible dream & then went back mentally & visualized our house on fire. I then pictured waking every1 up &leading them out. Then I saw myself running back in to try and save our valuables, thinking about if I could only save one thing, what would it be??? In my mind, I went for our family photo album. While looking for it, I pictured seeing an interior wall that had burned ( there was now a hole in the wall, so that the fire had exposed the inside of the wall). I pictured a metal box, about the size of a shoe box sitting inside the wall. Out of curiously I grabbed it to. When I got outside to the family, we opened the box & found it packed with gold coins! As I fell back asleep, the family & I were taking it for appraisal. I hope you try this & it works for you as well. I wish you Good luck, peaceful sleep & God bless!!!
Try reading, that helps me all the time, it will take your mind off the dream, also you may not have to go back to sleep, just read for an hour, then go take a long shower, make a really good breakfast, for your family, to surprise them, then read a little more. This will all help take your mind off of it.
