Is pipe tobacco any safer than cigarette tobacco?

I AM AWARE SMOKING IS HARMFUL TO MY HEALTH, I don't need to be told why I should quit! With that said, I just started rolling my own cigarettes because I discovered a brand of tobacco at the smoke shop that I really like. (if I didn't like it before, I sure like it now that I've figured out I can support my smoking habit for $16 a month rather than the $210+ it cost to smoke Newports every day!!) Anyway, I chose the pipe tobacco over cigarette tobacco because it is cheaper. Does anyone know if pipe tobacco is any safer than cigarette tobacco or is it just as harmful to my health?

No, tobacco is tobacco...it all contains nicotine and tar.
edit: and don't be fooled by menthol, still a killer.

Breathing the air, which is polluted by the exhausts of a million cars, is harmful to your health. Tobacco is tobacco, so you smoke(or don't smoke) whatever you want. Don't let the anti-smoking nazis determine what you do-YOU make that choice!

Right, I'm aware, but tobacco itself is not all that harmful to anyone's health. Smoking straight up tobacco is hardly harmful to us at all. It's the drugs and chemicals we as people soak the tobacco in, treat the tobacco with, etc...that is harmful to our health. I just wondered if [because one type of tobacco is for cigarette smokers and one type is for pipe smokers] either one had any less or any more chemicals, drugs, and/or poisons added to them than the other.

Considering ive never smoked before i assumed all that was harmful sorry dont really know about that..

I'm answering this question as I'm watching an interview of some filmmakers doing a documentary on the tobacco industry. Tobacco isn't just tobacco--it is also a cocktail of chemicals, some of which have been determined to be as addictive as cocaine. Not only is any commercial form of tobacco poisonous, it will also turn you into a stoner. Don't touch it in any form.

The documentary is scheduled to be released in September.

"It will turn you into a stoner?!?????!!!!" LMAO!!!!! Did you SERIOUSLY just say that?! First of all, I requested that NOBODY tell me how or why cigarette smoking is harmful to my health and why I should quit, and you clearly ignored that very simple request of mine. I asked a specific question that I wanted answered--Is pipe tobacco and cigarette tobacco equally harmful to my health or is one safer than the other?--I do not want to hear your personal opinion on smoking. I can't get over that bit you posted tho--tobacco smoking will turn you into a stoner---WHAT?!?! and tell me, exactly how is that true? I've been a smoker for 15 years and I can assure you I am not a "stoner," I never have been, and I never will be. LOL! I'm seriously laughing hysterically over that bit you typed... **SMH** Ahhh, ignorance in it's finest!!

Chemical analysis of consumer tobacco reveals a chemical cocktail of other addictive substances besides nicotine, and yes, I'm serious. These are the facts.

Safer, but still not safe, I role my own smokes too , because the chemicals they put into a cigarette to keep it from flaring up do half the damage on your lungs. hope this is helpful

The lesser of two evil , should be the one that's filtered. So if you purchase you roll your own, make sure to purchase filters

Oh my, of course... I wouldn't think about smoking without a filter.. Mainly because I smoke menthol and I get migraines if I smoke them without the filter...

Poisons still get past the filter, though, sorry. Filtering poison still gives you poison.

Pipe smoke is less safe because cigarettes have filters that pipes dont

You obviously didn't catch the point that bit about I'm using the tobacco for making my own cigarettes---whether I use cigarette tobacco or pipe tobacco, in my case, it will ALL be put in a filtered cigarette tube.

Making your own cigs won't put a filter in 'em, unless you put in the filters yourself. Sorry.

Its worse!
Cigarettes have a filter and pipes dont so you get more of a harmful intake of tar, carbon monoxide, and also nicotine.
So you have an even higher risk of getting types of cancer, asthma, and other breathing problems with a pipe then you do with cigarettes.

True, but there are unfiltered cigarettes available. You're quite right about the filter, but you'll still get toxins coming through and poison is poison regardless. :)

When I was a smoker, I also rolled my own and also used pipe tobacco. I heard somewhere that they only have to use 2% pipe tobacco to call it that. Anyway, I thought it was harsher. I got sore throats more often from it. I also found that it caused my voice to be hoarse a lot.

I've been smoking pipe tobacco for 6 days now.. Up until this last week, I've smoked Newport100's for 15years. I have noticed my voice getting raspy and my throat feeling sore and rough. I attributed it to the fact that everyone--literally EVERYONE--in my family is sick, except me so far...(Knock on wood...) My father has strep throat and everyone else just has nasty colds.. I thought I was getting sick too but now I wonder---Maybe it's this new pipe tobacco? I've been getting weird headaches too..I suffer from headaches quite frequently but not like this, not these kind. These headaches feel weird..I normally have a headache/migraine for a few days before I get sick with a cold/sinus infection/congestion so again--Am I getting sick or is it this new tobacco?? I know you can't answer these questions, I'm just "thinking out loud." I guess ONLY TIME WILL TELL! I'll just have to let time pass in order to figure this one out!

I can answer that question, though, having put a lot of research into the matter already--the coating tobacco puts on your lung's cells will inhibit proper oxygen intake, and that does in fact cause headaches. It also causes throat and mouth cancer, so a raspy voice is something you should expect, even with pipe tobacco.

Yes, pipe tobacco uses less additives ie chemicals. For instance pipe tobacco is about five dollars for a carton. Cigarette tobacco which can also be purchased in bag form for rolling your own, in the same one carton sized bag can be as much as $40. The reason is that its not just cut length that is different between them. Cig tobacco is so much more because the taxes are way higher due to the fact there are a bunch more of those added and addictive chemicals put into cig tobacco that is not put into pipe tobacco. Am I saying its totally safe? that answer is obviously No. Just the facts.
