Why is it important to shower after sex?

ive always showered after sex, but i noticed my cousin sharing her sex life openly with me, she mentioned that she sometimes doesnt take showers after sexual intercourse, i want to provide her with knowledgeable advice so tht i hopefully encourage her to take care of herself better, she looks up to me!!

You think that every couple in America has sex and then get up and showers? Come on.... Really?!?!?
After 4 kids, when we get it on at night, I'm lucky if I get up to pee! if it's morning sex, that's different!
Maybe it's different if you haven't been with the same guy everyday for 15 years, but married folks do NOT jump up and shower. We snuggle and sleep!

Well it's commonly known for guys to PEE after intercourse, to avoid urinary tract infections. But for girls, it's really not that big of a deal. Very rarely will a female see problems if she goes the whole evening without showering until morning. Even if the guy releases inside of her. As long as he is healthy, generally the female will not see any problems.

But I've gotten to the point, where I just finish and pass out. I've never had a urinary tract infection or even had pain in the morning from not peeing. Generally I would say this is just a TIP to stay healthy and avoid infections. Not a solid "DO IT OR THIS WILL HAPPEN" statement.

Hope this helps you!

But for girls its wayy diffarent, its been scientifically proven tht most girls encounter uti's after not peeing or showering because our urethra's are shorter and make it faster and easyer for bacteria to travel versus a guys urethra being longer thus making it harder for bacteria to travel
Report as
Not only does the urethra not directly connect to the vagina or the uterus, but also if the man has a healthy sperm base (Sperm health is based on daily habits, such as diet, smoking pot, stress) then the female should be fine. If your cousin is taking it in a place other than the vagina, and her man is healthy, she will be able to rest easy. If she is worried though, or if you are worried, then advise her to take showers after intercourse. It's that simple.

I'm sorry, I meant "If your cousin is NOT taking it in a place other than the vagina, and her man is healthy"

Women have to pee after intercourse but everything else is optional.

This is a public health issue and most of the time it is religious. In some religions like Islam you can't practice any rituals without being clean after having sex

Showering after sex is OK, I recommend it, but showering DURING sex can be a lot better and more efficient.

150 years ago it was also common for many women to die during child birth. 120 years ago you could buy a bottle of morphine at the local drug store over the counter without any prescriptions but we don't do that any more either. Just because we did things or had to do things a certain way a long long time ago doesn't mean you should still do it now. 120 years ago they had a laws in some states where a man was allowed to beat his wife as long as the stick he beat her with was no thicker than his thumb. There's millions of bad things people use to do but don't do it any more. I'm not saying showering after sex is a mandatory action. I myself & married & after a long hard day with work, kids, & a lot of other stuff the last thing I wanna do is jump out of bed & shower after sex with my husband, especially since I shower every morning for work. But being married to the same person for years is different from what a lot of these younger kids are doing now days. Some of these kids jump from person to person.

It wouldnt cause bacteria to go inside of u??
Report as
Miss Lovely, I think you need to take a closer look at who or what you're getting your information from. I'm sorry but the facts just aren't there to prove that infections and not showering after intercourse have anything to do with each other.
Report as
We all have bacteria all over and inside of us naturally.

Bacteria is a good thing. It keeps your body healthy and alert to more serious problems that could be going on. Bacteria is on all surfaces of nearly all things. Your body needs bacteria to train itself to fight. If we did not have bacteria attacking us constantly during every waking hour, the human race would cease to exist, because our immune systems would buckle to a common cold. The only way you'll get an infection from not showering is if your man has a different, and threatening bacteria in his release (Sperm, bodily fluids exchanged during intercourse). And if he does have these bad bacteria, that means he is unhealthy and needs to make a change. It has nothing to do with showering or not.

Womens bodies are completely different from Mens. So I would honestly watch who's giving you advise on your Female parts. Unless this man is a doctor that's telling you Bacteria is good for your body then I wouldn't put much weight in that. There is bacteria every where but that doesn't mean it's good for you. Americans spend billions of dollars every year trying to disinfect everything. Why on earth would every one be doing that if "hey no biggie Bacterias good for us" let's not forget about doctors who teach us to wash our hands after using the bathroom. Gee I wonder why that is!? Cause bacteria is so great for us. Probably not! That's why there's signs every where telling you WASH YOUR HANDS. All I know is it's good to ask questions rather than just guessing but if you really want to know ask your OBGYN she/he would be the best person to answer all those questions & they would really know what is bad & what is good for you ;) all we can do is give you our own personal opinions based on what each of us does in our own lives but a professional would know what's best ;) good luck.

Mommyslilmonster: i completely agree, unlike most ppl and their comments on this thread, i thnk hygine is very important, especially after sex, i dunno y ppl thnk its ok not to shower, but hey ppl are diffarent, i actually asked my cusns gyno today (i took her in to get some sex answers) and the gyno said it would b a smart thng to shower after sex, and YES there are diffarent bacterias and sex juices (if u may) after sex it would b nasty to feel ok with walking around like nothing in sex juices and bacterias, i do value everyones opinions tho, thx to u all!!

Not if your living together and in a committed relationship. It's personal choice. Personally I shower before and so does he. Sometimes together, so we are fresh for eachother.

Ok the reason for WOMEN is actually a health reason. Womens vaginal areas are very sensitive & are very warm & moist. This is a breeding groud for bacteria & increases the chances of getting infections. The chances also increase for getting an infection If a guy you have sex with isn't clean & he leaves something behind after penitration this can cause infections or even a UTI (Urinary tract infections) this chance is increased even more if the guy isn't circumcised. Showering after sex is not mandatory but it's a good idea, or if you can't shower then try to at least pee (this gets rid of a lot of bacteria left behind from penitration. Or wipe yourself with a baby wipe or feminine wipe. Women can get infections (like yeast infections) simply from wearing the wrong type of panties or wearing their jeans too tight or even from eating something that irritates you when you pee. Just try to keep your vaginal area as clean as possible. I hope this helps ;)

I was told not to use chemical cleansers. I have never in 42 years had a yeast infection. Female cleansers are full of irritants.

Shower after sex is important. For a woman the vagina can be a breading ground for virus and bacteria. By showering, I read it slightly reduce chances for an STD to be spread, reduce BV, and reduce UTI.
