What is good for equilibrium problems.

I am 56 and I have always worn high heeled shoes on Sundays since I was 16. Now when I wear them, I feel off balance. I have tried meclizine and it was not effective. How can I improve this problem without giving up the high heels.

Ok, I'm not calling you "old" (because your not!), but I have to tell you, this is an age related problem. As we walk or even just stand, our brain and feet are constantly sending messages to "auto correct" our balance. (Just stand as still as you can, pay attention to your feet, and watch them go to work!) As we age, this starts to slow down and therefore the feet aren't compensating quite as fast as they used to. Balance is always better in flats or bare feet anyway; so you're just noticing this because of the heals compromising it a bit more. It's true exercise or yoga can help, but if the problem continues, you might want to switch to a bit lower heal to prevent a nasty fall and possible injury. Oh, and yes, an inner ear problem could cause balancing issues, but you would most likely experience vertigo with that. My answer was based on your age. Again, not saying that's old! We are all heading that direction with you . :)

Try balancing a book on your head. Try walking on curbs, if they have those in your city. These are exercises which help improve balance.

I heard that yoga improves balance- I believe it too, have you seen the crazy contortions these people can twist themselves into? And on one foot no less. I'd hate to see you give up your heels- we ladies love to be 3 inches taller than the average human:) get a beginners yoga DVD and practice that for a half hour everyday if you have the time or the inclination. Good luck woman!

Many balance problems originate in your inner ear (vestibular system), an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist will typically manage your care. If your balance problem is caused by a neurological, heart or psychiatric condition, your doctor will refer you to the appropriate specialist for treatment.
