Is a Palate Expander really necessary?
My 12 year old son has had his braces on for 8 months now and his teeth are straightening up very nicely. The top teeth look great to me and his bottom teeth (just three months with the braces) are also lining up now.
My question is this: The ortho wanted to start with the Palate Expander but as my kid was entering junior high and I sure as heck didn't want him going into his new school with a lisp, I said NO WAY. So they started with the braces. Now I'm looking at my kids teeth and they look good enough for me ... it was never about perfection, it was just about looking normal. SO.... if I'm satisfied with how his teeth look just doing the braces, what is the real need for the expander? Is it trying to attain "perfection" in his smile? Or are they worried about the teeth getting crooked again if his jaw isn't widened?
The ortho guys DO become hostile when you try to ask them these questions, so I'm throwing it out there for normal people to give me the scoop. I've already paid for the orthodontics, so whether we put my kid through this expander or not won't matter to our bottom line.
