Overall no. While the carbon footprint of a electric car is smaller at the beginning of it's life span the cost of producing new batteries every 4-6 years and recycling the old ones very quickly raises the footprint to that of a gas or diesel vehicle. Also the production of the electricity you use to charge your car needs to be considered. If your local electric is produced from a coal plant or a nuclear plant then the environmental costs have just increased radically. You also have less power to accelerate and depending on your state there are problems with operation in extreme cold.
