Alexandre Dumas was born in July 24, 1802, in a small French town. He took his last name Dumas from his grandmother who was a former Haitian slave. He lived until December 5, 1870, when he died in Puys, France.
In 1822, Dumas moved from his small French hometown to Paris, and it was there that he studied literature working as a scribe for King Louis Philippe during the 1830 revolution. He also began to write plays, including both dramas and comedies. He had a romantic style that was quite different from the style of his contemporary rival, Victor Hugo. He began writing essays, novels and short stories in addition to his plays. It was "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers" that made him a household name in France and England.
In his personal life, Dumas had one son, Alexandre, with Marie Laure Catherine Labay, although he married actress Ida Ferrier and had several affairs. He had at least one daughter out of wedlock, and it is unknown how many other children he fathered. He was also known to date women much younger than himself.
