Q:

Where did Leonardo da Vinci live?

A:

Leonardo da Vinci was born in Italy, then alternated between life in France and Italy before ending his days just outside of Amboise, France. Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in the town of Vinci, Italy, which lies in the Tuscan region. Leonardo then relocated to Florence, Italy to carry out an apprenticeship, then moved to Milan to embark on his first professional endeavor as a sculptor and painter.

Leonardo arrived in Florence in 1478 to study painting and sculpting under the instruction of mentor Andrea del Verrocchio. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, Leonardo relocated again, this time to Milan, to work for the prominent Sforza family. His work for the noble family included engineering, painting, sculpting and architecture. Leonardo's career in Milan proved productive and promising. He produced a mural called "The Last Supper" while in Milan, but found work and life interrupted by the invasion of French troops into Milan during 1499. The Sforza family fled to Florence, maintaining residence there through 1506. Despite the political turmoil, Leonardo produced several works of art, including the Mona Lisa. Following his residence in Florence, Leonardo packed his belongings and once again headed to Milan in 1506, where he stayed for the next seven years. In 1517, he relocated to Rome, but moved back to France following an invitation by Francis I, the King of France, to live in his prestigious castle outside Amboise.
