Matisse believed that intuition and instinct must guide an artist, Daniels details. He had become well known internationally by 1919, and he exhibited his work in New York and throughout Europe. As he was bedridden for three months in 1941 after a surgery, Matisse developed a new art form, the "drawing with scissors" method, which turned into one of his trademark techniques. The technique involved cutting out shapes from painted paper and assembling the shapes into various designs.
According to the Henri Matisse website, Matisse is popular for his use of color, fluidity and original draughtsmanship. He is primarily known as a painter, although he was also a sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman. Along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, Matisse is considered as one of the three artists who played key roles in the revolutionary developments in plastic arts during the 20th century. He also made significant contributions to developments in sculpture and painting.Learn more about Painting
