Q:

How do I apply henna onto my hair?

A:

Henna is an alternative hair dye for people who don't want to use chemical treatments on their hair. Apply henna to your hair using henna powder and a few supplies.

  1. Gather your materials

Apply henna to your hair with henna powder, lemon juice, water and plastic gloves. You also use a measuring cup, spoon, bowl, cloth towels, paper towels, saran wrap or a plastic shower cap, hair clips, petroleum jelly and latex gloves.

  2. Make the henna paste

Measure 1 cup of henna powder and 1 cup of lemon juice. Mix the ingredients thoroughly in a bowl. Cover the bowl with saran wrap and let stand for at least 12 hours. Keep the temperature of the mixture as close to 70 degrees Fahrenheit as possible.

  3. Add water

Add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of water to the henna and lemon juice mixture. Add the water slowly and stir with a spoon. Make a mixture with the consistency of yogurt. Let the mixture sit for 12 hours.

  4. Protect your clothing

Wrap an old towel around your shoulders and secure it with a clip. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly on your forehead and temples at your hairline to prevent your skin from being stained by the henna.

  5. Divide hair

Divide your hair into small sections. Leave one section free, and secure the remaining sections with hair clips.

  6. Apply the henna paste

Put on latex gloves to protect your fingers. Scoop a bit of henna paste onto your fingers and apply it to your hair. Work with one section at a time. Thoroughly cover each strand of hair in the section, and secure that section with a hair clip. Remove the clip from the next section of your hair and apply the henna paste. Continue until all of your hair is saturated with henna.

  7. Cover your hair

Wrap your head with saran wrap or cover it with a plastic shower cap. Leave the paste on your hair for up to 60 minutes for the most intense color. Keep your hair warm by blow drying it through the plastic wrap or cap. Henna works best when it is warm.

  8. Rinse your hair

Remove the plastic wrap or cap from your hair. Rinse the henna paste from your hair. Apply conditioner to your hair and leave it on for five to 10 minutes. Rinse the conditioner from your hair.

  9. Wait patiently

Wait for the color to tone down. Henna is bright for one to two days immediately after dying. The color tones down with washing.
