There are several ways to give yourself a layered haircut, although the most popular involves gathering the hair into a ponytail and snipping the ends. The supplies you need are a hairbrush, a mirror, a hair elastic and scissors. This procedure takes about five minutes and works best on long hair.
- Prepare your hair
Brush your clean dry hair and gather it into a high ponytail. Secure the ponytail with an elastic band.
- Position the tail
Pull the ponytail over your head and down in front of your face.
- Cut the end of the ponytail
Use the scissors to cut off as much hair as you wish. Hold the scissors parallel to the floor and cut straight across the ponytail.
- Inspect the layers
Remove the elastic band, and fluff your hair with your hands. Examine it in a mirror. If you find small sections that are too long, snip them.
- Check for split ends
Pick up small sections of your hair, and search them for split ends. Trim split ends directly above the split.
- Angle the layers around your face
Add shape and lift to the layers around your face by cutting the tips at a 45-degree angle. This is particularly flattering on long faces.
