As of 2013, there were 942 Marshalls stores in the United States. Most Marshalls stores are approximately 31,000 square feet. Alfred Marshall, alongside a group of entrepreneurs, founded Marshalls in 1956 in Beverly, Mass. The group came up with the concept of selling brand name items at a discount. The original Marshalls was self-service and sold clothing and house wares. To diversify its offerings, the store leased extra floor space to independent sellers, which helped Marshalls maintain profitability. Consumers were not aware of the business model. A soda shop and grill named the A & M Luncheonette was in the original store, as well. The retailer has been through several acquisitions since its birth in 1956.
