Used to tone down or blend away gray hair, lowlights for gray hair are achieved by coloring select strands of gray hair. In most cases, stylists use a color that is close to the natural color. However, lowlights can be any color that is darker than the gray hair.
There are several lowlight application techniques, including foil weaving, painting and frosting. In weaving, stylists use a weaving technique to isolate strands of hair, color them and wrap them in foil to protect the rest of the hair. Frosting involves pulling hair through a frosting cap, whereas painting techniques involve merely painting the color onto the hair.
