A homemade enzyme cleaner includes a combination of water, citrus peels, active yeast, apple cider vinegar and brown sugar. The mixture takes three months to ferment in a non-airtight container to become a usable cleaner. Use a bottle that has a wide enough lip to allow for chopped citrus peels. The recipe also requires a funnel and a cheesecloth strainer.
For a 2-liter bottle, use 2 cups of peel from any citrus fruit, 1 liter of water, 1 teaspoon of active yeast and ½ cup of brown sugar. Combine these ingredients in the bottle, using the funnel if necessary.
Being careful not to spill, shake the bottle to mix the ingredients. Shake it for around 30 seconds. Then, cover the bottle opening loosely enough to allow air bubbles to escape.
For the first few days, shake the bottle once per day to remove the foam caused by the buildup of gas bubbles. Again, allow the air to escape.
Allow the mixture to sit undisturbed to ferment anywhere from two days to three months. Release the gas as needed.
Using the cheesecloth or a mesh sieve, strain out the peel. In a glass spray bottle, mix the remaining liquid with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar.
