A casting call is an audition process where people try out for roles in a film, play, television show or other type of entertainment performance. For major productions, celebrity talent is often invited to audition. An open call means anyone is allowed to show up to audition for roles.
The length, steps and format of a casting call vary by production. In some cases, actors prepare their own monologues, musical performances or skits to present. At many casting calls, the casting director and other members of the production staff observe prospects reciting lines from a character in the film or show.
