Founded in 1991 and based in Bellevue, Washington, Coinstar provides green kiosks in grocery stores, drug stores and other retail locations that collect unsorted coins. Customers can choose to receive cash back minus a conversion fee, as well as retail gift certificates for no charge. In addition, they may choose to donate the amount to charity.

The company changed its name to Outerwall, Inc. in 2013, and it also owns Redbox, a DVD rental kiosk company. Outerwall reports that it has more than 64,000 Coinstar and Redbox kiosks.
