As of September 2014, McDonald’s sells about 6,480,000 hamburgers in a day worldwide. This works out to 75 hamburgers every second. The restaurant has come a long way from its humble beginnings.
The first McDonald’s Bar-B-Q restaurant was opened in 1940 in San Bernardino, Calif., by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald. The original restaurant was set up as a drive-in, boasted a large menu and included car hop service. In 1948, the restaurant closed for renovations. Three months later it opened again. This time the hamburger became the main item on the menu and sold for 15 cents. In 1954, salesman Ray Kroc visited the McDonald brothers. He explained his idea of having McDonald’s become a nationwide chain. In 1955, he established the McDonald’s Corporation.
