A network engineer serves several roles, including installation of support networks and network technologies, evaluating network configurations, recommending effective network designs, training networking staff and configuring software and equipment to meet organizational needs. A network engineer is expected to have training and experience in network administration.
Network engineers develop, implement, maintain and support communication networks within an organization. They also ensure that the network infrastructure is reliable and available to users such as customers, suppliers and staff members. Network engineers are also responsible for ensuring that computers, communication devices and firewalls within a network are functioning properly.
These engineers are expected to work as part of the networking team. In addition, they supervise network connections in an organization’s data center. Network engineers also direct system installation processes, define and document system implementation processes, and enforce implementation standards. They also develop innovative solutions to network problems and ensure that the network environment is resilient. Their roles in securing networks include the establishment of network policies and monitoring access.
Network engineers also update network equipment, find faults in the network and conduct remote troubleshooting. They speak with users, via phone or email, to ensure that they have captured the requirements of the system. Network engineers can be part of an organization’s networking team or outsourced personnel. When network engineers are outsourced, they play consultancy roles. The roles of network engineers are influenced by the size of their organization and the sector within which it operates.
