Sigma Gamma Rho is a historically African-American sorority that was founded at Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. on Nov. 12, 1922. The sorority's aim is "to enhance the quality of life within the community."
As of 2014, membership in Sigma Gamma Rho exceeds 85,000 members. The sorority has over 500 chapters that are spread across the United States, the Bahamas, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Canada, Germany and Korea. Famous alumnae of Sigma Gamma Rho include singers Kelly Price, Maya Leak and Vanessa Bell Armstrong and actors Hattie McDaniel, Ella English, Victoria Rowell, Tonya Lee Williams and Anna Maria Horsford.
