What Is an Advanced Diploma?

An advanced diploma is a high school diploma that indicates a student has achieved more than the bare minimum. More courses must be taken to earn an advanced diploma. Typically, additional math, laboratory science and language credits are required. In some cases, another history or social science course is necessary.

It is recommended that students consider their plans beyond high school when selecting a diploma path. Deciding to obtain an advanced diploma often reduces the number of electives students are allowed to take. To earn an advanced diploma, students must pass any proficiency exams that are required by their state. Some school districts also offer advanced honors diplomas that require students to take additional honors-level courses.
