What Is the BRIGANCE Test of Basic Skills?

The BRIGANCE test of basic skills is a test given to children to determine their psychometric skill levels at certain tasks based on every other child their age in a surrounding area, group or nation. This test has been recently revamped to “BRIGANCE Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills II,” as the United States population is steadily increasing.

The “BRIGANCE Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills II” test was set up to determine the academic assessment of each child between preschool age and 9-years-old. In 2009, it underwent a massive overhaul, incorporating more testing in each area of reading, English and mathematics. The original test, the “BRIGANCE Test of Basic Skills” was created by Albert Brigance. When the new sections were added in 2009, the test was renamed the “BRIGANCE Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills II.”

The specific areas of the test that is given to preschool, in special cases, through sixth grade are:

  • Warning signs and safety signs
  • Labels, warning and otherwise
  • Recognition of words for grade placement
  • Survey for the analysis of words
  • Vocabulary levels and reading levels for grade placement
  • Understands age-level sentences and paragraphs
  • Age-appropriate problem solving skills for grade placement
  • Grade-level computing skills
  • Grade-level spelling tests
  • Writing sentences at appropriate grade level
