How Do You Get a CFC Certificate Online?

To get a cholorofluorocarbon certificate online, people must select an EPA-approved test provider, download and study the certification materials and then pass the test. Only type-I certification is offered online, covering technicians who work with appliances with up to five pounds of refrigerant.

The Environmental Protection Agency maintains a current list of approved test providers for the CFC certificate online. Only EPA-approved providers can issue a valid CFC certificate. Some approved providers offer only on-site tests. Those that offer online tests also provide electronic study guides and interactive practice tools with payment of the basic test fee. Online type-I certification tests are open book, meaning a test taker can use study materials during the test.

CFC certificates are also known as section-608 technician certificates because the certification requirements are part of section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Section-608 technicians are those who maintain, service, repair or dispose of appliances and devices that have the reasonable potential to release ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants such as R-11, R-12 and R-22 into the atmosphere. Technical activities requiring certification include adding or removing refrigerant from appliances or devices and attaching and detaching pressure-measurement hoses and gauges to appliances and devices that contain refrigerants. Qualified apprentices working under the direct supervision of a properly certified technician do not require a CFC certificate. CFC certificates do not expire.
