The 13 affiliated conferences include the Big Sky, Big South, Colonial, Ivy, MEAC, MVC, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Pioneer, Southern, Southland and SWAC.

All schools belong to one of these leagues, with the exception of Charlotte, which currently competes as an independent. East Tennessee State and Kennesaw State are scheduled to begin FCS play in 2015, as members of the Southern and Big South, respectively.

The postseason consists of a 24-team playoff, with the conference champion of each league but the Ivy and SWAC receiving automatic postseason berths. The remaining 13 teams are selected at-large, and the top eight teams determined by the selection committee receive first round byes in the single-elimination tournament.

With six national championships, Georgia Southern has won more titles than any other current FCS school, followed by Youngstown State with four. Appalachian State won three consecutive championships from 2005 to 2007, while North Dakota State also won three in a row from 2011 to 2013.
