What Is a Good Topic for a Speech to Entertain?

A good speech topic for entertaining an audience is one that engages the audience throughout the entire speech. An entertainment speech is not focused on the end result as much as it is focused on the process of the entire speech. According to Writing Commons, the three main types of a speech that is meant to entertain include the after-dinner speech, the ceremonial speech and the inspirational speech.

According to Writing Commons, the after-dinner speech basically utilizes an informative or persuasive speech and includes humor throughout to help the audience remain interested. A ceremonial speech is a speech that entertains because of the context in which the speech is given. Examples of a ceremonial speech include toasts, introducing the next speaker or even a eulogy. An inspirational speech is an entertaining speech because of its connection to emotion and its purpose of getting the audience members to make a change in their lives.

Toastmasters International states that practically any idea can be the topic of a speech. However, it is important to understand the purpose of the speech (in this case, to entertain) as well as to have a one-sentence description of what the speaker ultimately wants to tell the audience.
