There are no Ivy League schools located in the South. The Ivy League is comprised of eight schools – Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and Yale – that are located in the Northeast United States.
There are many schools in the South on par with the quality of the Ivy League. For example, Rice University in Houston, Texas is considered to be an Ivy-League-quality school.
The Ivy League is not just a casual moniker applied to elite schools. Rather, it is a formal grouping of schools into a conference. The most obvious instance of this conference grouping comes in sports, where the eight Ivy League schools compete in NCAA-sanctioned competitions. These include Division I basketball and Division II football.
The demographic breakdown of Ivy League schools is not consistent with the demographic breakdown of the United States. The percentage of African-American students enrolled at a given Ivy League University ranges from 6 to 8 percent, which is lower than the percentage of African-Americans in the U.S. as a whole, 13 percent.
White enrollment accounts for between 41 and 58 percent of a given university’s enrollment, which puts every Ivy League university at an enrollment percentage lower than national population percentage, which is 63 percent white. Other enrollment data includes Asian students, 12 to 18 percent of enrollment, at a much higher rate than the national population percentage, 5 percent.
