How Long Is the Membership Intake Process for the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority?

The average membership intake process for African American Greek organizations like Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) averages 6 to 8 weeks according to “The Root.” The official process is unknown since the process differs from campus to campus. One example is the University of South Carolina; its National Pan Hellenic Council states its members’ intake process may take up to a semester.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is the oldest Greek letter organization for black women, according to the sorority’s website. Members began the Greek sorority in 1908 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Ethel Hedgeman, Nellie Quander and eight Howard coeds formed the first chapter.

Besides in the U.S., the sorority has chapters in Canada, Japan and throughout the African continent. Its initiatives include the Emerging Young Leaders program through which the organization seeks to prepare 10,000 girls in grades six through eight for leadership in the 21st century, and it funds numerous scholarships.
