How Do You Make an Outline in APA Style?

Writing an outline in APA style involves formatting the lines properly, using 12-point Times New Roman font and creating detailed headings. Each point of the outline starts with a header, which is marked by a Roman numeral. The subheadings will use a capital letter, and each point will use a standard bullet.

  1. Format the document

Before starting, format the document so that it has a one-inch margin. APA format also uses double spacing. Times New Roman font should be set to 12 points and used throughout the entire outline.

  2. Create a heading

Type the Roman numeral I followed by a period. Press the space bar twice and type the first heading of the outline. Press enter.

  3. Write a short subheading

To create a subheading, use a capital letter followed by a period and two spaces. Additional subheadings will use letters in order until a new heading is needed. The first subheading will always be A under each heading. Keep each subheading to a short, concise title and press enter when done.

  4. Use bullet points to express details

If a subheading needs to be clarified, use a bullet point to write out the details. These details can be in full sentence format.
