How Is the Term “study Skills” Defined?

Study skills are defined as strategies and methods to efficiently manage learning. Study skills consist of time management strategies, note taking and active listening abilities, and summarization and analysis skills.

Study skills develop over time and with maturity as students discover how they learn. For example, some students may retain information more when presented with visuals, while others absorb information efficiently through lectures or textbook readings. Part of developing good study skills is to acknowledge how people learn in different ways.

Study skills are often presented to students from a very young age and are applied as they graduate to higher classroom levels and more challenging coursework. For example, elementary students are taught to highlight key words when reading. Students in secondary classrooms or higher education often apply these study skills to textbook readings when highlighting primary passages or themes within literature or chapters of a textbook.

Time management is also a crucial component of study skills, since students need the skills and discipline to prioritize assignments and set aside time to study, review and highlight materials to prepare for exams, essays and presentations. When students adequately learn how to prepare and focus on specific tasks, these study skills often serve as the foundation for learning.
