A tertiary qualification is a program of study in Australia that is considered higher education. It is very similar to college, and a tertiary qualification or education can come from a governmental or private institution.

To be considered a higher learning institution in Australia under a tertiary qualification, the institution must be recognized as such under law. Law-governing bodies that regulate tertiary education in Australia include the Australian government, the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory or a recognized state. Training in the workplace is also provided in Australia and is considered to be tertiary education. To participate in the Industry Training Organization program, the applicant will need to be gainfully employed.
