There are numerous scholarship opportunities available for high school seniors based on varying credentials such as merit, financial need, choice of major, and even nationality. If you happen to be of African American descent there are a tremendous number of scholarships available to you. These scholarships can contribute toward a large portion of your college tuition and may even cover the entire cost! Here are the three best of these scholarships.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or the NAACP is a well-known and established organization whose mission is to better the lives of colored people across the United States and around the world. One way they do this is through their scholarship program. Every year they give out generous amounts of grants to those students who showcase outstanding academic achievement. Their scholarships differ in amount but this is one of the premier scholarship opportunities as they offer more than most other foundations or institutions.
The United Negro College Fund, UNCF, manages many scholarship opportunities through their own network of connections with outside organizations and companies. Each year they reward over 60,000 students scholarships worth anywhere from $500 to $10,000 per year. They have several different scholarship opportunities available and each has its own set of criteria, however you must be African American for each of them. This is a great place to really get as many applications out as possible.
Every year the Ronald McDonald House Charity, or RMHC, offers scholarships to those students who unfortunately have limited access to educational opportunities. They offer over $44,000 of funding per year for students based on need, merit, and ethnic background. Their African American Future Achievers scholarship in particular pays out at least $1,000 to high school seniors who are admitted and plan on attending an accredited 2 or 4-year university. Of course these students must also have traceable roots of African American descent.
