Many scholarships are designed to help students from low-income families attend college. While there are a lot of scholarships out there, there are a few that stand out as being the best scholarships for low income students.
Gates Millennium Scholarships
Perhaps the best scholarship for low income students, the Gates Millennium award provides full tuition to students from low income backgrounds. Students from minority ethnic background are also given special consideration. The award is designed to help tomorrow’s leaders of America be able to attend college. For that reason it’s a highly selective and prestigious scholarship. In order to be considered students must have a 3.3 GPA on a scale of 4 while in high school and must demonstrate a commitment to learning and leadership ability.
Unmet Need Scholarship Program
This scholarship is part of Sallie Mae’s scholarship fund. The program is meant to help students from extremely low income families fill in a need of $1,000 or more that was not met by traditional financial aid. The income ceiling is $30,000 combined for the entire family. The scholarship can provide between $1,000 and $3,800 in unmet need. The scholarship is open to US residents attending accredited colleges and universities within the country and who have a GPA of at least 2.5.
Google Scholarship Program
The Google scholarship program offers awards of $10,000 to Hispanic students who demonstrate financial need. Google’s scholarship targets students who are of Hispanic background and pursuing a degree in computer science or computer engineering in order to promote more ethnic diversity in the field. Students must be academically successful in order to qualify for the award; Google requires that students have a 3.0 GPA on a scale of 4.
There are other scholarships that low income students may qualify for but these three scholarships represent the best of the best in terms of prestige and/or size of the financial award.
