The 3 Best Party Frocks This Season

By Marty Michaels , last updated October 28, 2011

Halloween has come and gone, and it’s now time to contemplate the upcoming holiday parties on the horizon. Above all else, make sure you have at least one new, drop-dead-gorgeous party dress to wear to your most elegant party. There are tons of beautiful dresses available, particularly in this season’s must-have midi length, so get that new frock lined up before all the invitations come rolling in! Here are the three best party dresses culled from the current collections at Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters:

The Midi Length

If you can buy only one dress this winter season, consider a wispy silk-chiffon frock that you can dress up with elegant ballet flats and a luxe shawl or cardigan. As you might expect, Anthopologie has some romantic dresses along those lines, and one of the prettiest is the Tangerine Flicker Dress ($358) by coveted designer Tracy Reese. The silk chiffon on this midi-length dress is a glorious light orange that’s spot on trend for Fall/Winter 2011, as is the contrast gold embroidery that shimmers across the bodice, sleeves, and hem. The slightly A-line silhouette is girly yet sophisticated, with a defined waist and scoop-neck front.

The Gypsy Dress

Meanwhile, the buyers over at Urban Outfitters have put together an exclusive holiday dress collection, the 12 Days of Dresses. One standout is the Ecote Piano Dress ($149), a bohemian, sheer chiffon dress with a whole lot of panache. Yes, it’s black, but if this is the dress for you, you’ll know it right away! What makes it so unique are the beautiful embroidery and tassel fringe on the hem and kimono-style sleeves. The dress comes complete with a tonal slip, so just ease it on for a vintage rock-n-roll party dress best complemented by lacy tights and suede boots.

The Metallic Dress

You’ll be seeing sparkles and sequins everywhere this winter party season, and one of the prettiest examples at Urban Outfitters is the Ecote Metallic Dolman Tee Dress ($54). This sparkly knit dress comes in a lovely copper color and sports a close-cut silhouette, three-quarter-length dolman sleeves, and a scooped neck and front. Pair it with flats or platform pumps and keep your jewelry on the low-key side so as not to compete with the dress!
