5 Best-Dressed Women of 2011

By Laura Axelrod , last updated January 3, 2012

You would never know it by the way some celebrities dress, but looking good is one of the perks of being rich and famous. With a staff of stylists at their fingertips, entertainers have ample opportunity to impress; yet, many of them look awkward and disheveled. Through tasteful and sometimes risky choices, these five women brought stunning style to 2011.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge

In 2011, all eyes were on Kate Middleton as she prepared for her April wedding to Prince William. The British press scrutinized her fashion choices, but Middleton made it look so easy. Her natural beauty and stunning figure reminded everyone of Prince William’s mother, Diana. Middleton’s pre-wedding wardrobe included practical pieces from Zara, a popular budget retailer. Her sensible, classic style made a positive impression on the public. For her wedding, Middleton chose a romantic, traditional lace gown by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. The blend of minimalism and elegance was a fashion hit. Now known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Middleton frequently steps out in pieces from Reiss and Issa. Fashionistas love replicating her ensembles.

Michelle Williams

Actress Michelle Williams has transformed herself from the girl-next-door to a world-class sophisticate. Williams, widely known for her role as Jen Lindley in “Dawson’s Creek,” used 2011 to her fullest fashion advantage. Her style was a mix of boho-chic and old Hollywood glamour. Fashion critics adored the white silver beaded Chanel gown she wore to the 2011 Oscars. Off the red carpet, Williams wore mod dresses, Peter Pan collared shirts, and peasant blouses. With her blonde pixie haircut, the actress closely resembled Hollywood star Mia Farrow from the late 1960s.

Jennifer Hudson

With her widely publicized weight loss, Jennifer Hudson emerged as a style icon. She was able to pull off a few distinctive looks others could never wear. In 2011, she appeared on the Oscars’ red carpet wearing a bright orange Atelier Versace gown. In a sea of black and metallic dresses, the choice was risky and successful. One of her best outfits of the year was the leopard-print dress she donned for the Michael Kors’ Fashion’s Night Out. Its cinched waist and high neckline fit her figure perfectly. Hudson proves that any woman can transform herself into a fashionista.

Jennifer Lopez

When it comes to glamorous and dramatic fashion, few people compare to Jennifer Lopez. Her bold outfits emphasize her roles as an entertainer and diva. Lopez appeared on the 2011 Grammys wearing a silver sequined Pucci micro-minidress. It was an unforgettable outfit. As host of “American Idol,” she was careful not to upstage others. She chose tasteful dresses and jumpsuits with animal-print or glitter embellishments. For everyday looks, Lopez wore clothing from Kohl’s new Jennifer Lopez line. While she likes revealing her body, Lopez has learned to be tasteful and elegant in her choices.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman continues to make a name for herself as an actress and style icon. Although she spent much of 2011 with a baby bump, Portman’s clothing choices complimented her pregnancy. During the Independent Spirit Awards, she donned a Givenchy babydoll dress. Its yellow empire waist and lace trim flattered her figure. For the Oscars, Portman wore a purple Rodarte gown. Draping details on the dress made her look like a goddess. Portman proved that pregnancy could be fun and glamorous.
